Bereavement, life & caring

Three easy-read books and workbooks for understanding loss, living with mortality and responding to the suffering of others.

All Circuit books

A series to read and talk through together.

The bereavement series follows three connected questions: How do we live without someone we love? How do we live knowing our own lives will end? And how do we stay open to other people’s pain?

Written in everyday language, these books combine short chapters with workbooks for churches, clubs, small home meetings and other discussion groups. You can also use them on your own. There is room for different beliefs, uncertainty, humour and the ordinary pleasures that help make life worth living.

From Stuart’s forewords

Searching for understanding.

These books have grown out of Stuart Corlett’s 25 years of working cross-culturally in Thailand and Shan State, and seeing how suffering and loss have shaped his own life and the lives of people around him.

In his forewords, Stuart reflects on his mother’s death, the end of his marriage, growing older, walking alongside friends in difficulty and listening to people from Myanmar who have endured terrible losses. He writes as someone still learning, whose encounters across cultures and beliefs have deepened his questions about grief, mortality and care.

He has also seen people find ways to go on, to laugh and to experience happiness. The books grew from his wish to understand those experiences and make room for honest conversation. Understanding, he has found, can help us work out what to do next.

His hope is that these pages give readers something to think through privately and with friends: how to remember, how to enjoy the days we have, and how our words and actions might make a difference that continues in other people’s lives.

Using the workbooks with a group.

Each workbook follows the chapters and has two parts: Talking together, with questions to choose from as a group, and Just for you, with prompts for private reflection. Participants do not need to share their written answers.

  1. Choose a chapter. Read it before you meet, or read a short section aloud together.
  2. Pick a few questions. Follow what feels useful to your group. There is no need to answer everything or agree on one conclusion.
  3. Make room for each person. Let people pass, listen without trying to fix, respect different beliefs and take breaks when needed.
  4. Leave time to reflect. Use the private prompts and consider one thought or small action to carry into the week.

The books permit readers to copy the workbook pages for personal use or use in a discussion group. Groups can move at their own pace, making room for silence, tears, laughter and changing needs.
