Since Feb 2021, communities in Shan State have been embroiled in conflict. This is caused by complex politics, and the desire of many different factions to have control over this resource rich land. Typically as a small organisation we do not engage in direct aid to refugees and internally displaced people. There are however, times when we simply cannot turn a blind eye, especially in areas where we have development projects.
To give an example, one community we work with lives at the juncture where three different armed forces are positioned. What that means for the community is 3 times the tax, three times the potential to be caught in crossfire and three times the chance that your children will be conscripted to one of the armies. This is reality for our people.
